There are a number of bars that cater to the foreign or western trade in Nantong, most within walking distance of each other. This does not mean, by any means, that alcoholism is rampant or out of control in Nantong. The vast majority of foreigners who frequent bars are responsible drinkers who meet at the bars primarily for socializing with other foreigners and the occasional Chinese co-worker, colleague or associate. Most hotels have a bar of some sort, though not typically what is found in Western hotels. All restaurants sell beer at the very least and allow patrons to bring in their own bottles of liquor. Smoking is permitted in all restaurants and bars. Some bars come and go - while other bars are long lasting in Nantong.
