Nantong Shopping

Nantong provides many shopping areas where virtually everything and everything can be purchased.  Typically, the best places for bargains are going to be in the night markets or the numerous shops that line the main streets and hundreds of narrow streets off from the main streets.  Often the smaller shops will have what you need or desire, especially if you are of a larger stature than the average Chinese person.  Bargaining is welcomed at these shops and typically the shop keeper will go to his or her lowest selling price rather quickly.

Nantong has three main department type stores:

Metro:  Located near the old campus of Nantong University.  This is a membership only store, but membership is free and easy to obtain.  All that is  needed is passport or residence book.  Metro stocks a lot of imported items and is considered by many to be a "bit pricey."  Often though, the imported items are of better quality than some of their Chinese brand counterparts.

Stock:  Clothing, electronics, dry goods, appliances, office supplies, groceries, meats, fruits, vegetables and liquor.

Metro does not provide bags or boxes to carry your purchases, so you must either bring your own or purchase bags at the check out counter.  Accessible by public transportation or taxi cab.  Approximately 3 km. from the City Center.

Lotus:  Located on the primary road towards Shanghai. approximately 6 km from the City Center.  Lotus is similar to a large discount department store like Wal-Mart or Tesco in other countries.  The store has a KFC restaurant at one end and numerous small shops in the lobby selling clothes, perfumes, clocks and other items.

Stock:  Clothing, electronics, dry goods, appliances, electric motorbikes, office supplies, groceries, meats, fruits, vegetables and liquor.

Accessible by public transportation or taxi cab.

Carrefour:  Located near the City Center Carrefour is similar to large discount department stores in other countries.  While Carrefour does stock some imported items, the selection could be better.

Stock:  Clothing, electronics, dry goods, appliances, office supplies, groceries, meats, fruits, vegetables and liquor.

Wen Feng Department Store:  By far, and without a doubt, the largest shopping experience one can find in Nantong.  Located in the center of the City Center, this six story store is the host to numerous retailers selling everything imaginable.  Some products featured are likely to be counterfeits, but the majority are most likely original name brand products.  Send your wife or girlfriend in there first thing in the morning with a few hundred Yuan and you will have a day all to yourself doing what you want to do.

Access to the store is best by taxi.  Even with a taxi, you may have to walk a bit to get to the store, especially on week-ends or holidays.  In the immediate are are hundreds of other shops - just walk down any alley and you will be amazed at what is being offered.
