Nantong Transportation
Car, bus, coach, boat, ship and train information

Getting around Nantong and the surrounding area is quite easy and can be very economical.

City bus lines  The buses run frequently from early morning until approximately 6:00 PM.  They cost 1 Yuan to ride, and there are over 50 different lines or routes.  Bus stops are clearly marked throughout the city with shelters along side the streets.

Taxi:  There are literally hundreds of taxis in Nantong that can take you virtually anywhere.  In the main city area, it is usually possible to go anyplace for a flag fee of 8 Yuan.  A 6.5 km ride will cost approximately 15 Yuan, regardless of the number of passengers.  There are both the equivalent of "kamikaze" taxi drivers and safe to overly safe taxi drivers.  You have no way of knowing until you get in the cab.  Most cabs are older vehicles (probably used previously in Shanghai) and hence, may not be quiet.  All do seem to have brakes though and varying degrees of heat.  All taxis are meter cabs and receipts are provided at all times, printed from the meter.

The majority of taxi drivers do not speak English, however most are eager to try to find someone that does speak English along the street.  If you know where you want to go, you can simply give the driver directions as you go.  Alternatively, many businesses provide business cards with their particulars written in Chinese, as well as the particulars for other businesses in the area.
